Artificial intelligence isn’t coming. It’s already here. It powers your Netflix recommendations, helps your home security camera spot movement, and even takes your order at fast-food drive-thrus. When you scroll through TikTok and see videos perfectly tailored to your interests, that’s AI too. It is quietly working behind the scenes in banking, healthcare, retail, and your daily life.

AI is not replacing us. It is changing how we live and work. The goal is to learn to use it safely and smartly, and protect against cybercriminals using it to scam and defraud us.

What AI Can Do for You

Used wisely, generative AI can:

• Write emails, posts, policies, and reports in minutes.

• Summarize lengthy documents and meetings.

• Review contracts for confusing or risky language.

• Create recipes from photos of what is in your kitchen.

• Turn handwritten notes or whiteboard snapshots into editable text.

• Translate languages instantly or brainstorm new ideas for work or school.

AI is a powerful assistant that can save time and reduce stress, but it must be used with care.  Safe AI Use Starts With You. Protect your privacy and your data. A few smart habits go a long way.

• Never upload personal, financial, or confidential information. Redact names, Social Security numbers, and addresses before using any AI tool.

• Always fact-check the results. AI tools can sound confident even when they are wrong.

• Use long, strong passphrases or facial and fingerprint recognition instead of passwords.

• Turn on multi-factor authentication so a hacker cannot access your account with just one password.

• Keep your devices and apps updated automatically to patch security flaws.

• Install trusted antivirus protection on every device you use.

How Cybercriminals Use AI

Criminals love new technology. They use AI to commit old crimes in new ways.

• Deepfakes: Criminals can clone a person’s voice or face using just a short video or audio clip. Victims have received calls that sound like a loved one asking for money or help.

• Fake documents: AI can create professional-looking contracts, invoices, and IDs that appear authentic but are completely fabricated.

• Phishing messages: AI can write convincing emails and texts that look like they are from your bank, boss, or delivery company. One careless click can lead to stolen data or drained accounts.

How to Protect Yourself

• Create a family or workplace code word to verify identity. If someone calls asking for money or sensitive information, do not respond unless they know the code word.

• Keep a contact list with verified phone numbers and email addresses. Caller ID can be faked.

• Take a moment before reacting to emotional or urgent messages. Scammers want you to panic.

• Report suspicious activity to your bank, IT department, local law enforcement, and the FBI's ic3.gov, immediately.

The Bottom Line

AI is a powerful tool that can make your work faster, your ideas stronger, and your life easier when you use it safely. Be aware that the same tools helping us create and connect are also being used by cybercriminals to scam, steal, and deceive. Stay informed, think critically, and protect your personal information.
