This Black History Month, we celebrate Mr. Michael Patrick McMillan, a leader whose life reflects service, sacrifice, and an unwavering commitment to the people of St. Louis.

Black history is not only written in moments of protest or progress, but in the steady, faithful leadership of those who answer the call to serve. Michael Patrick McMillan is one such figure, a modern example of leadership rooted in purpose, justice, and compassion. His work reminds us that true legacy is not defined by position or title, but by consistent devotion to uplifting others.

Michael Patrick McMillan: A Modern Servant-King for St. Louis

“A king is recognized not by his crown, but by his commitment to his people.”

Michael Patrick McMillan, President and CEO of the Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis, exemplifies this truth. His life and leadership remind us of the biblical posture of a king, one who serves, uplifts, and empowers his people.

McMillan’s journey began as a volunteer at age 16, and over decades, he has devoted his life to lifting communities and transforming systems. In 2013, he became the Urban League’s seventh president and CEO, overseeing an organization that touches hundreds of thousands of lives annually through programs in education, workforce development, housing, and economic empowerment.

Under his leadership, the Urban League has grown from a modest fifteen to seventeen million dollar budget to over fifty million dollars annually, expanding programs, facilities, and services across the St. Louis region. His vision has turned historic buildings into community hubs, senior living centers, and cultural arts spaces, ensuring that opportunities thrive where they are most needed.

McMillan’s leadership shines brightest in moments of challenge. Following the unrest in Ferguson and during the COVID-19 pandemic, he mobilized resources, programs, and aid, ensuring that the most vulnerable received support, jobs, and hope. After the 2025 tornado in North St. Louis, he again led emergency relief efforts, providing food, housing, and essential services to affected families.

His actions reflect the biblical model of leadership, serving others first, protecting the weak, and guiding with vision and integrity. In every crisis, McMillan embodies the principle that true authority is measured by the well-being of those he leads.

In Scripture, kings like David and Josiah, and leaders like the cupbearer Nehemiah, were celebrated not for crowns or titles, but for their commitment to justice, protection, and the empowerment of the people. Michael Patrick McMillan mirrors this ideal. He creates programs that address systemic inequities, builds lasting institutions, and leads with compassion, wisdom, and strategic vision.

As a servant-king, he inspires all who witness his work to serve others, invest in community, and leave a lasting legacy of hope and opportunity. In a world that often confuses leadership with power, McMillan reminds us that true leadership is service. As believers, we can take this lesson to heart, asking how we can be servant-leaders in our own spheres and how we can uplift those around us while leaving a legacy that honors God. Heavenly Father, we thank You for leaders like Michael McMillan, who mirrors the heart of Christ in their service. Grant us the courage to serve our communities, the wisdom to lead with integrity, and the vision to create lasting impact. May every crown of achievement be laid at Your feet, and may Your kingdom be advanced through our hands. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

No great leader stands alone. The remarkable accomplishments of Michael Patrick McMillan are made possible by the dedicated staff, supportive funders, and committed partners of the Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis. Their unwavering support, hard work, and belief in the mission allow the League to thrive, innovate, and transform lives throughout the region.

To every employee who serves with excellence, every funder who invests in hope, and every partner who collaborates to uplift the community, we salute you. Together, you reflect the spirit of teamwork, vision, and service that embodies the heart of a true biblical leader.

As we celebrate Black History Month 2026, we proudly honor Michael Patrick McMillan, a modern servant-king whose leadership, vision, and compassion inspire countless lives in St. Louis and beyond. His example reminds us that true legacy is not measured by titles or accolades, but by the impact we make in the lives of others.

May his life continue to ignite hope, foster empowerment, and reflect God’s kingdom on Earth, and may his story inspire generations to serve boldly, lead wisely, and love generously.

“It is Such an honor to serve my community under the great leadership of Michael Patrick McMillan!”
