For the Hands That Hold Us Steady: A Black Mother's Father's Day Vision

"Melody Fogarty"

Trees

As a Black mother, watching the sunset paint the sky tonight, my heart isn't just filled with love for my own child's father, but with a profound, resonant gratitude for **all** of you. Yes, you. Every single father – Black, white, Latino, Asian, Indigenous, of every faith and every background – who wakes up each day committed to loving, raising, guiding, and protecting a Black child.

Tonight, as I look at my own child sleeping, safe and dreaming big, I see beyond the present. I see the future we are *all* building together, brick by brick, hug by hug, lesson by lesson. And fathers, you are the unwavering foundation.

Thank you. Thank you for showing up. Not just physically, but emotionally, spiritually, consistently. Thank you for the bedtime stories that weave magic and history. Thank you for the scraped-knee bandages and the tough conversations about a world that doesn't always see their brilliance. Thank you for teaching them to tie their shoes, throw a ball, cook a meal, change a tire, and, most crucially, to respect themselves and others. Thank you for the whispered affirmations: "You are strong." "You are smart." "You are worthy." "You are loved, unconditionally."

Thank you for the sacrifices seen and unseen – the long hours worked, the dreams deferred, the patience stretched thin but never breaking. Thank you for modeling integrity, for showing them what it means to be a man who respects women, who handles responsibility, who owns his mistakes and strives to be better. Thank you for teaching them to navigate complexity, to question injustice, to find their voice, and to use it with conviction and compassion.

But my gratitude isn't just for yesterday and today. It's fuel for the vision we share for *tomorrow*. The vision you are actively shaping through your daily love and labor.

The vision I see, the future we are co-creating, is one of Freedom Without Limitation.

I see a future where our Black children step into the world unburdened by the weight of predetermined ceilings or the distortion of harmful stereotypes. I see them walking with heads held high, not because they are defiant, but because their inherent dignity is recognized and reflected back at them in every classroom, every boardroom, every courtroom, every street corner.

I see them pursuing their passions without artificial barriers – whether it's astrophysics or agriculture, coding or carpentry, artistry or activism – guided only by the expanse of their own imagination and effort. I see their brilliance illuminating solutions to global challenges, their creativity enriching culture beyond measure, their empathy forging deeper connections across all divides.

I see a world where their Blackness is not a hurdle to overcome, but a source of strength, history, and unique perspective celebrated as an integral thread in the vibrant tapestry of humanity. A world where their safety is assumed, their potential is nurtured, and their dreams are met not with skepticism, but with genuine support and opportunity.

This is the destination: Freedom Without Limitation. Freedom to be, to become, to thrive, to soar. Unconstrained by systemic bias, unhindered by fear, unlimited by the low expectations of others.

And fathers, you are the architects of this freedom. You build it:

*  In the resilience you model: Showing them how to face adversity with grace and grit.

*  In the boundaries you set: Teaching them self-discipline and respect, the cornerstones of true freedom.

*  In the love you pour: Filling their emotional reservoirs so they know their worth isn't defined by the outside world.

*  In the conversations you have: Preparing them for reality while fiercely protecting their hope.

*  In the communities you build: Creating networks of support and belonging that amplify their strength.

You are dismantling old limitations with every affirming word, every protective stance, every lesson in self-worth and history. You are planting seeds of boundless potential that will grow forests of achievement.

So, this Father’s Day, we see you. We honor you. We thank you – deeply, powerfully – for the fathers you are today. And we stand beside you, full of hope and unwavering commitment, as we journey towards that bright horizon together.

Keep holding their hands steady. Keep speaking life into their spirits. Keep showing them the way. The future – that glorious, limitless future – is being built right now, in the love and lessons you give each day.

With profound respect, gratitude, and shared vision,

Regards,

Melody Fogarty

This week has been a powerful reminder of one of my divine assignments in this season: the role of a spiritual father. I’ve had the joy of sitting with several young ministers, pouring into their lives, encouraging their calling, and helping shape their future. I have two more of those meetings today.
